How Nashville Became Music City

Nashville wasn't always Music City. For decades it was a government town, a place where cotton and livestock moved through on their way somewhere else. Then, on November 28, 1925, a Nashville radio station put a fiddle player on the air. Everything after that followed from a single broadcast.

History & Origins

Fort Nashborough went up on the Cumberland River in 1779. Nashville became Tennessee's capital in 1843. For decades it stayed a trading town. Cotton and livestock moved through. Nothing about it said music yet.

That changed on November 28, 1925. WSM radio put a 77-year-old fiddle player named Uncle Jimmy Thompson on the air. The show was called the WSM Barn Dance. In 1927, the host renamed it the Grand Ole Opry, live on air, as a joke about grand opera. The name stuck. Studios followed. RCA Studio B opened in the 1950s. Elvis recorded there. So did Dolly Parton. By the 1960s, Music Row was a full industry district.

Broadway Is Where Visitors Start

Every bar has live music. Most charge no cover. Walk in, order a drink, and hear someone play, maybe their 300th show, maybe their first week in town. It's the tourist version of Nashville, and it's genuinely worth an evening.

East Nashville Is Where the Real Nights Happen

Songwriter nights run on weeknights here. No production, no pyrotechnics. Just a guitar and a song that might be on the radio in two years. Fivepoints is the main intersection, ringed with vinyl shops and dive bars.

Music Row Is History Disguised as an Office Park

Recording studios and label offices sit inside converted houses on 16th and 17th Avenues. RCA Studio B is open for tours. Walking these streets means walking through recorded American music history.

September through November brings the best weather. Temperatures sit in the 60s and 70s. The Americana Music Festival runs in September. Summer runs hot and humid, with CMA Fest pulling 100,000 people downtown in June.

Downtown, the Gulch, and 12th South are walkable. The Music City Circuit runs a free downtown bus loop. Outside the core, plan on driving or rideshare.
